Client: Mr Todd

Architect: Spacesix

Budget: £180,000

Status: Under Construction

Information: Situated on a back lands site just off Church Street the Mill commands a secluded spot within the village of Kilbarchan just South of Glasgow. The Mill is a Georgia building built in the 1780’s. The Mill started out as a residential building until the turn of the 19th Century where it was converted into a small Timber Mill and Joinery Workshop. Over the years various shed like structures were added to the building which detracted from it’s simple charm but were essential to accommodate its commercial use. The Mill operated up until the early 1990’s. Thereafter, it remained unused and fell into a state of disrepair.

The proposals to redevelop the building sought to remove the shed like structures and repair and restore the brickwork to its former glory. All the windows and doors were also replace with period sash and casement units. The ground floor of the building contains an open plan lounge and dining area with small WC and cloak space. To the rear of the building a new single storey kitchen and family area that opens out onto a garden sun terrace is currently being built. A large void was also opened up between the Ground and First floor to allow the Ground floor to be flooded with South light.

The First floor consists of a gallery landing which overlooks the Ground floor, two double bedrooms which open out onto a shared Juliet Balcony and family bathroom. A feature open tread staircase was also installed and scales two storeys to the attic. The attic space has been converted into an extensive master bedroom with en-suite.

The client has filled the house with salvaged period detailing. These include, the fireplace, church radiators, cast-iron balustrades to the stair, sinks, baths, cisterns, timber floors, windows and doors.
